Women's History Month - Day 2

On the 2nd Day of Women's History Month, we are celebrating Sarah Goode, the first African-American woman inventor to receive a patent.

"Born into slavery in 1850, inventor and entrepreneur Sarah E. Goode went on to become the first African-American woman to be granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, for her invention of a folding cabinet bed in 1885."

Sarah Goode invented a multi-functional piece of furniture to meet the new needs of smaller living spaces within urban developments. It was made to "occupy less space and made generally to resemble some article of furniture when so folded."

As seen in the advertisement above, her cabinet bed allowed those that lived in close quarters, a "Goode" night's sleep on a full sized bed.  The desk is fully functional for daytime use and still had storage space once opened up as a bed.  Our thoughts are that her invention made way for what we see now as the Murphy Bed, invented by William Lawrence Murphy, which wasn't patented until 25 years later in 1910. 

As an African-American women-owned business, we personally feel connected to Sarah Goode. We understand the idea of multi-functional furniture and as a business, we help our clients to repurpose their vintage and antique furniture into functional uses.
