B4/After Chifferobe

2020 has been a very interesting year for all!  Many people are home therefore we've received multiple requests for us to enhance, upcycle, and redesign furniture that may have stayed the same for many, many years to come had we not had the time to actually stay indoors and enjoy our homes.

Here is an antique chifferobe that our client received from his mother over 40 years ago.  It was a piece that he grew up remembering her using in her own bedroom.  This year, he and his wife reached out for us to refurbish it back to it's original glory without the cherry wood look. We also fixed the split in the base and the top of the frame.

By the look on their faces when they came to pick it up, we know that were thrilled with the outcome!  Can't wait to see their followup pictures with it inside their home.

Lane Chests are part of History

This beautiful vintage Lane chest came into our warehouse looking completely different. When clients send us their Pinterest projects, We Chic It! for them.

This client had planned on painting her family heirloom, cedar Lane chest like many people share on Pinterest. Her dad didn’t even remember seeing it in his mother’s home in any other color than “dark”. So when she starting to strip the glaze and white paint off the chest, she began to see a beautiful wooden design and decided to bring it “to the professionals to do it right”.
Here’s her only original picture of when the chest was "dark", the second picture is how we received it, and last picture is once We Chic'd It! It took a little while stripping the glazed layer and painted layers before we could see the beautiful design.  Once it appeared, we were excited to seal and move forward.  Only problem was there were stains all over, including cup stains.  After using the liquid stripper, we determined that we would need to use a sander to strip down the remaining marks, and use a slightly darker stain to bring it back to life. When the stain hit the bare wood, the design glowed!  Another reminder of why we do what we do.  We breathe new life into your everyday furniture!

This family heirloom is already filled with her grandchildren’s toys for when they visit her. We’re so blessed to have assisted her family in updating their Lane Cedar Hope Chest for many more years to come.

Women's History Month - Day 3

3/3/2018

Thanks for following us throughout Women's History Month! We've learned so much these last few days and can't wait to share them with you.

Today we are adding three women for our Women's History Month celebration.

First up, Mária Telkes...

Like the idea of a solar powered home??? Physical chemist and biophysicist, Mária Telkes develop solar-energy applications and received several patents for her work. Together with American architect Eleanor Raymond, she designed and constructed the world’s first modern residence heated with solar energy. The house was built in Dover, Massachusetts, in 1948.......Can you believe it! 70 years ago!!!

She is also known for her invention of the solar distiller that changes salt water into drinking water...
In 1952 Telkes became the first recipient of the Society of Women Engineers Achievement Award. In 1977 she received a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Sciences Building Research Advisory Board for her contributions to solar-heated building technology and the Charles Greeley Abbot Award from the American Solar Energy Society.  Lastly, in 1980 she assisted the U.S. Department of Energy in the development of the world’s first solar-electric residence, which was built in Carlisle, Massachusetts.

We love the idea of homes, especially shipping container homes being powered by solar and having salt water purified into drinking water!

Women's History Month - Day 2

On the 2nd Day of Women's History Month, we are celebrating Sarah Goode, the first African-American woman inventor to receive a patent.

"Born into slavery in 1850, inventor and entrepreneur Sarah E. Goode went on to become the first African-American woman to be granted a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, for her invention of a folding cabinet bed in 1885."
Picture
Sarah Goode invented a multi-functional piece of furniture to meet the new needs of smaller living spaces within urban developments. It was made to "occupy less space and made generally to resemble some article of furniture when so folded."

Women's History Month

We're kicking off Women's History Month by celebrating Tabitha Babbitt. Her curiosity and problem solving intuition helped her invent the circular saw in 1810.

As a women-owned/run business, we stand tall each time we use a miter saw (a modern day circular saw mounted to cut wood at an angle) and other saw tools to cut our salvaged pallet/reclaimed wood.

You can have that same feeling of empowerment during one of our upcoming events!

Why blog???

10/31/2017

Let me start by saying that I'm not a writer by nature. I like to take pictures of everything. A photography blog would probably be the best option for me and I think that I'll start posting more often if I didn't feel pressured to write a multiple paged article styled blog. I haven't blogged in months due to my worrying about not sounding like a blogger and not wanting to upset our audience. But pictures tell a story and you may actually learn more about what we do and how we do it by pics.

If you like this idea, comment below. Your comments let us know if you like what you are seeing as well as if we need to make changes. Just as we post pics on social media, we'll do the same here. So here goes....

From Broken to Pallet-Infused: Upcycled Entryway Dresser

10/28/2016

Help us on my mission to keep people from throwing away solid wood furniture in the trash when it can be upcycled into something new.

During a visit to see one of our "furniture pickers", look at what he found!  This dresser that was a sight for sore eyes but we had to have it!  Even though it wasn't pretty, we knew that with some patience and a vision, we could breathe new life back into it.   Off it went to our warehouse!
Picture
First, we looked to see if the base was structurally sound and to see what was broken/missing.  We noticed that 1 glove box was still located on top, however, the second one wasn't attached nor available.  Therefore we decided that it would be best if we removed it.  You can truly see the years of wear and tear even after sanding down the top.
Picture
Next, we began to plan out the internal structure.  One of the two larger base drawers were broken and missing parts. Plus the original fruit carved hardware was chipped.  Thus, we knew that upcycling the dresser would be the next best option.  Here are some of the wood frame pieces that were removed.  They will be reused in another project!
Picture
Now that we were finally had the frame cleaned up, we could see how we would restructure the dresser. Being upcyclers, we determined that we could use salvaged chair legs to raise the dresser up and give it support.  Plus use reclaimed pallets to add in support to the base.  As a touch of fun, we also pallet-infused the sides.

Once the entire piece was ready to paint, we used our custom homemade upcycled chalk-styled paint (classes available) for the outside, inside back non-pallet wall, and back of the dresser.  Plus a variety of second-hand store purchased Minwax and General Finishes stains/gel stains for the top, inside the drawers, on the infused pallets, and salvaged legs.

Share to help us find the right owner for this one-of-a-kind piece! It can be shipped anywhere in the U.S.A. from our warehouse in N.C.

Measures: 46"l x 19"w x 31"h

Great addition to any entryway, living room, office, bedroom or den! It is currently staged with 1 basket but 2 will fit! We can even add cable holes in the back for your electronic devices.

To join us on this upcycling journey in saving vintage/antique furniture from ending up in our landfills, visit our website and/or other social media pages.  We have other pallet-infused furniture as well as upcycled furniture.  Looking forward to "Chic It" with you or for you!
